Gay enclaves in the Caribbean are few and far between, making this queer-popular, 21-mile long gem of an island that much more special. For a few years now, it's been attracting gay A-listers (actor John Cameron Mitchell, comedian Sandra Bernhard, designer Narcisco Rodriguez, and "Good Morning America" weatherman Sam Champion), and queer couples and retirees. To cement the isle's gayness, it's also where Ricky Martin comes from! Vieques (population 9,000 lucky souls) is incredibly low-key and unplugged. The island's streets have no names, there are no traffic lights, and donkeys meander across the roads between the two main villages, Esperanza and Isabell II. Most travelers rent out villas and houses, many of which are gay-owned, and there is a small handful of gay and lesbian-owned B&Bs and guesthouses. Gays are a presence on the beaches—Navio and Garcia being a couple of queer favorites—and the old-timer islanders easily respect the LGBT visitors. Just don't expect a South Beach or Ibiza experience: Vieques is rural, slow-as-molasses, and silent at night, just the way the locals and tourists like it. In other words, it's the perfect gay romance and honeymoon destination.
