Probably the most popular on Culebra, Flamenco Beach is a horseshoe-shaped, half-mile-wide stretch of white powder sand that got its name from the pink flamingos that once nested nearby. It's ringed by mountains and bordered by the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, one of America's oldest preserves, dating back to 1909. Calm, electric-blue waters make for excellent swimming, especially for children (waves only come when there's the odd winter storm bringing northerly swells). The beach is patrolled and kept tidy and safe, and amenities include changing rooms, bathrooms, picnic tables, food kiosks, and beach chairs and umbrellas for rent. The only drawback is lack of snorkeling: The reef is about a quarter-mile offshore on the west side. Be sure to check out the beach's old World War II tank, half-buried in the sand but decorated with colorful designs, standing as a reminder that Culebra was once a firing range for the U.S. military.
