Wanna join a surfin' safari? South Seas Horizons runs a number of tours, and they're one of the only organized surf tour operators in the country. Week-long packages are based at the newly established surf camp of Rubio Plantation Retreat on the surf-rich east coast of New Ireland. The local surf season is from mid-October to mid-April, and South Seas Horizons never books more than ten surfers at a time. Around Rubio are nine excellent breaks, from heavy barrels to point swells to reef breaks, all fronting remote isles, many uninhabited. Boats and vehicles can transport you to these surf spots, and Rubio itself is set on over 180 acres full of traditional bungalows.
