Pleasant Madang (pop. 30,000) is one of the more tourist-friendly towns in PNG, with an infrastructure of hotels, stores, and tour operators. The town is also a favorite of expatriates, and many NGOs in the region are based here. Founded by Germans in the 19th century, this pretty, walkable town is perched on a peninsula and dotted with parks (just keep an eye out for bats hanging out in the trees overhead). It's a relatively new city, having been mostly rebuilt after the Japanese occupation during World War II. Madang also makes a good base for exploring the neighboring islands and coastline, renowned for diving and laid-back beach lodgings.
