The Metropolitan Museum of Art—or simply, the Met—is one of the most celebrated art museums in the world. The more than two million works contained in its permanent collection are housed in a nearly mile-long building along Fifth Avenue and the eastern edge of Central Park. Visitors will find pieces from classical antiquity and Ancient Egypt, as well as from African, Asian, Ocean, Byzantine, and Islamic cultures, not to mention an impressive collection of works from European masters including Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Monet. The recently opened Hellenistic, Etruscan, and Roman galleries—filling a 30,000-square-foot wing and containing more than 5,000 objects—help tell the story of ancient Rome. The centerpiece of the new installation is the Leon Levy and Shelby White Court, a dramatic, skylit space that links the various galleries and themes. he Met is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
