Flanked by palms, ultramodern hotels on one side, and blue-green Caribbean water on the other, the Malecon looks even more spectacular on February 27. That's when locals and tourists come out of the woodwork for Carnaval—a night of drinking, dancing, parades, and parties. At midnight, fireworks burst through the sky and tipsy couples stumble over to the waterfront hotels to continue the festivities.

Really, every day is a celebration at the Malecon. Bistros, bars, and discos line the nine-mile boulevard overlooking the Caribbean shore. During the day, it's a family-friendly destination, perfect for sightseeing and strolling.
