Every year between January and March two to three thousand humpback whales (almost the entire Northwestern Atlantic Humpback whale population) migrate from all over the world to the warm waters of the Bay of Samana in order to mate and reproduce. The Bay is an extension of the Silver Banks humpback reproduction grounds north of the Samana Peninsula. Visitors have an opportunity to see the whales up close via local whale-watching boat excursions.
