Only a fraction of the area within Los Haitises National Park is open to the public. You will need a guide from the national park office to get you into the reserve, where you can visit grottoes with Taino pictographs and the ruins of a dock once used for banana shipments. From the beach, you will have a good view of Cayo Willy Simons, an outer island that served as a hideout for the well-known pirate. The highlight of the park is the enormous number of native and migratory birds that nest and feed among the lush vegetation that thrives on water from underground rivers. Three systems of caves that once housed native Tainos are part of a geological formation known as karst topography, which is carved by water into limestone.
