  • Bring sweaters, as it's chilly at the crater.
  • Part of the fun is the drive from San Jose to the Parque Nacional Volcan Irazu. On the 90-minute drive, you'll pass by potato and cilantro farms, cattle pastures, patches of purple wildflowers, and tall eucalyptus trees, a stark contrast to the barren, moonlike crater at the volcano's 11,260-foot summit.
