About a mile offshore, the shallow seafloor begins a steep drop. This vertical wall is the premier dive site around Puerto Viejo. Most dives start by descending to the edge before making a slow exploration along the vertical grade, which is covered in a menagerie of sea sponges. Along the foot of the wall, at about 100 feet, boulder fields and canyons provide hangouts for elusive seahorses. The final leg of the dive meanders through gardens of elkhorn and staghorn coral on the way back to the boat.
