It takes about two hours for dive boats to cross the Papagayo Gulf to the Bat Islands (Islas Murciélagos in Spanish) but the long ride is worth it. Big animals are the name of the game at The Big Scare, most notably the crowds of bulky bull sharks known to frequent these seamounts. Other indigenous species include manta rays, sailfish, and the occasional dolphin or whale. This dive is best suited to advanced divers, as the dive depths can drop to well over 100 feet.
