Just south of Puerto Viejo proper, the light-sand beach Playa Cocles stretches for more than two miles until it abuts the small, rocky protrusion of land called Punta Cocles. While many surfers come to Puerto Viejo to catch a glimpse of the wave Salsa Brava, the breaks off this beach are much better suited for novice to intermediate riders. The beach itself is a good spot for sunbathing and people watching, with easy access to nearby food and accommodations, but the water can be rough with strong currents—swimmers and snorkelers should check conditions.
