Playa Grande is considered one of most important nesting sites in the world for the baula, or leatherback, turtle. From early October to mid-February, many tours can take you to this famous beach where leatherback turtles come ashore to lay their eggs at night. In 1991, the beach and its adjacent mangrove areas and ocean were designated as Marino las Baulas National Park, and it is now carefully monitored to dissuade flash photography or flashlights, which repel the turtles. Playa Grande is also a famous surf spot, with offshore winds creating steep and powerful waves, especially at high tide and in front of the Hotel Las Tortugas. Reservations for turtle watching can be made up to seven days in advance through the national park, and are recommended, as spaces are limited.
