The Trust for Public Land bought Estate Maho Bay to save it from private development with a plan to add the property to Virgin Islands National Park. This means that the 415-acre estate is available to visitors for hiking, bird watching, watersports, and upscale eco-camping, a concept that began at Maho more than 30 years ago. Wooden walkways twist through property offering spectacular views, and the sea at Maho Bay is calm and shallow, making it ideal for children and snorkelers. The often-photographed bay has the only beach on the north shore that is directly on the road and easily accessible by car. Palm trees line both sides of the road and provide plenty of shaded parking. Planned activities at the campground include hiking, yoga, music presentations, island tours, watersports, and massage. The top attraction is an instructional program that teaches visitors of all ages how to turn recycled waste into art. On weekends, the bay is usually filled with beautiful boats that have journeyed over from nearby islands.
