Just north of the Skidegate ferry terminal, the Haida Heritage Centre stands at the site of an old Haida seaside village and was actually built to resemble a traditional Haida village. Five connected post-and-beam longhouses are fronted by monumental cedar totem poles carved by contemporary Haida artists. Inside, the center houses the Haida Gwaii Museum, which tells the 12,000-year history of the Haida. Totem poles dating back to 1878, wooden sculptures, and jewelry are among the artifacts. There's also a gallery, a gift shop, a canoe house, a carving shed, a café, artisans' workshops, and performance spaces. For an orientation to the Queen Charlottes and Haida culture, this is a great first stop.
