Goldstream River is the site of one of nature's wonders—the annual return of salmon. Fish come from thousands of kilometers away to wrestle their way upstream, to return to their birthplace to spawn. For spectators it's a show of finned determination and struggle, on view from October through November along the river banks. Located 20 minutes north of Victoria, the park is easily accessible, and the river is steps from the park entrance. The salmon run consists primarily of chum, but coho and chinook are also in the throng. Come December, the eagles arrive. More than 250 bald eagles and other birds of prey fly into the park to feast on the salmon until around February. At the mouth of the river, the Freedom King Visitor Centre overlooks the river's estuary and offers educational programs, wildlife viewing, and children's activities.
