A one-mile trail leads from the Michigan Island lighthouse to a campsite on the sandspit at the west end of the island.

There are two light towers at Michigan Island due to the blemished history within the Lighthouse Service. The original lighthouse was lit in the spring of 1857. Over the course of many years, a cylindrical steel tower off the Delaware River was disassembled and brought to Wisconsin receving the distinction of the State's tallest lighthouse.
