Harpers Ferry is the only town that the Appalachian Trail passes right through, and for many hikers the Appalachian Trail Visitors Center, located in Harpers Ferry about a quarter mile off the trail, is the psychological halfway point of the hike. The Visitors Center serves to provide information about the area, advice for navigating the trail, and a resting place for hikers.

You'll find resources such as maps, brochures, and hand-outs, and a volunteer or staff member is always on hand to answer questions about hiking the trail. A shop sells maps, guidebooks, hiking books, clothing, stove fuels, and much more. There are also several exhibits, including a raised-relief map of the entire Appalachian Trail and memorabilia from some of the trail's pioneers.
