The Smoke Hole Canyon is a remote and stunningly beautiful gorge, some 20 miles long and up to a half-mile deep, which carries the South Branch of the Potomac River through a rugged area of the Alleghenies. Possibly named for the fog or mist that often hangs over the water, the canyon is the heart of a wild and forested landscape, a habitat for resident and migratory wildlife. Maintained as part of the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, this destination also provides a variety of recreational opportunities, such as canoeing, kayaking, rafting, fishing, birding, hiking, camping, hunting, and caving.
