First Landing State Park - Virginia Beach Attractions

First Landing State Park is just a few short driving minutes from the busy Virginia Beach oceanfront, yet its seclusion lends one to believe they are far from this bustling tourist strip.

This pristine and beautifully preserved park is Virginia's most popular. It is named for the 1607 landing of the Virginia Company that led to the birth of this nation. Today the park looks much like it did then with beautiful beaches on the Chesapeake and large natural area with trails through a cypress swamp dripping in Spanish moss. This park is on the National Natural Register of Historic Places.

Recreation
Cabins, camping, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing and boating can be enjoyed practically year-round. The new Chesapeake Bay Center includes exhibits on the First Landing and marine life in the Chesapeake Bay.

This park is in close proximity to the Virginia Beach oceanfront. It offers enjoyment and variety for both families and singles. The busy sandy beach and boardwalk is very inviting and offers a variety of entertainment. Virginia Marine Science Museum, Norfolk Naval Air Force Base, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Old Cape Henry Memorial are just a few of the popular recreational opportunities available.

Location
Take Interstate 64 to Exit 282, Northampton Boulevard/U.S. 13. Continue on U.S. 13 for about 4 miles then turn right onto Shore Drive/U.S. 60 and travel approximately 3-4 miles. The park is accessed from both sides of U.S. 60. Camping and visitor center is on the left and cabins are to the right.

Climate
Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The eastern portion of the state has winter temperatures averaging above 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The eastern portion of Virginia generally experiences temperatures above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.
