The Long Trail is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States. Its 265 miles of mostly woodland path offers an opportunity to explore the superb public lands of Green Mountain National Forest and numerous other local areas. It was designated as a long distance trail in 1910 and follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border as it crosses Vermont's highest peak. More than 175 miles of side trails offer shorter day hikes, and nearly 70 shelters accommodate backpackers.
