Although the wilderness is closed to mountain bikers, the surrounding national forests have some good trails. Soapstone Basin Loop follows forest roads through a basin with wildflowers and fir and aspen groves. The trip is about 16 miles long with an elevation gain of 1,200 feet. To reach the trailhead from Kamas, follow the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway 15.5 miles east, then turn right and follow Forest Road 37/Soapstone Road for three miles to Piuta Camp.
