  • Known as the "slowest express train in the world," the Glacier Express is Switzerland's most famous excursion train. In 7 1/2 hours it travels through a truly glorious alpine landscape between Zermatt and St. Moritz, climbing over 6,670-foot Oberalp Pass. It operates year-round, with more trains in the summer. Even if you're going round trip, stay overnight at either end before returning.
  • On its 169-mile route, the train negotiates 291 bridges and 91 tunnels (keep the kids occupied counting), including 9.5-mile-long Furka Tunnel between Andermatt and Brig. There are modern panoramic cars mixed with antique dining cars that are cool because diners get specially tilted wine glasses designed to prevent spills on the steep sections).
  • Reserve seats facing each other; that way you get two window seats and stay close together. First-class passengers can sit in the glass-domed observation cars with narration. If you'll be taking other trains--and you should--buy Swiss Rail passes to economize. Get Junior Cards for kids ages six to 16 and they ride free with paying parents. Kids under age six are free but don't get seats.
