The Swiss Way starts in Rutli and ends in Brunnen, and relates the history of Switzerland surrounded by a scenic landscape. The trail was constructed as a joint project of the cantons on the occasion of the 700th anniversary celebrations of the Confederation (1291-1991). It begins on the Rütli Meadow, where the Confederation was founded, and ends in Brunnen in the Swiss Expatriates Square (Platz der Auslandschweizer). Each canton created one of the 26 sections of the Swiss Way, and the order of the cantons on the 35 km long path corresponds to the order of their acceptance into the Confederation. The Swiss Way is a pleasant 35-kilometre walk with local history, culture and encounters with happy, cheerful people. It is also accessible to non-walkers who can visit over a dozen places on the different sections on the route by boat, train or bus.
