Although Fatehpur Sikri was a bit of a folly, its creator, Emperor Akbar, is considered the greatest of Mughal leaders. The monumental tomb he designed for himself is found on the outskirts of Agra, six miles from Agra Fort. An immense gateway leads into the sprawling courtyard, with minarets framing the red sandstone tomb, contained within a stepped pyramid, studded with white marble inlay, and adorned in murals and gilt embellishments. Overlooked by many visitors, the mausoleum is a peaceful place for strolling through gardens filled with monkeys and deer—a wonderful respite from the traffic and heat of Agra.
