Designed by Anna Hyatt Huntington to mimic a butterfly's open wings, 9,200-acre Brookgreen Gardens is ever changing from season to season. In summer, Purple Coneflower, Ginger lily, and Blackeyed Susan spring colorfully through nests of long, wispy grass. The walkway of Live Oak Alley is naturally framed by 250-year-old timbers—shady canopies that arch high above the beautiful grounds. Residents of Lowcountry Zoo—deer, birds, and gators—are as much a part of the setting as the American figurative art, which by candlelight rivals the finest works of sculpture gardens anywhere.

  • America's largest outdoor sculpture display contains more than 500 works, all created by American artists. It's a remarkable collection, sprinkled about a classic Old Southern Plantation garden. Either, by itself, would make the visit worthwhile, but together they make this site a must-see.
  • Brookgreen is made up of four separate plantations purchased and combined by sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington and her husband Collis Huntington, the stepson heir of Big Four railroad tycoon Archer Huntington. Nearby Huntington Beach is named for the younger Huntington; the famed California surfing spot of the same name honors his stepfather.
  • The huge spread here includes a small wildlife park and a large aviary.
