Loterie Farm is a former plantation set in the rain forest at the base of Paradise Peak (Pic Paradis), the island's highest point. Hikers have the option of taking a tour with an entertaining and informative guide or setting out on their own along the network of trails that wind through thick woods. Either way, it's a moderate to difficult climb to the top of the mountain and the most spectacular views. Less strenuous routes to lower elevations are best for watching birds, investigating medicinal plants, and catching an iguana napping on a rock. By far the most popular adventure is the zip-line and ropes course strung through the treetops, 20 to 80 feet (six to 24 meters) above the ground. Kids and adults get equipment and instruction, then spend a couple of hours walking suspended bridges, swinging Tarzan-like on ropes through the trees, and crawling up web ladders. Real daredevils kick it up to the Extreme level, which is a notch or two higher and faster.
