Named by Portuguese explorers who gasped at the golden sands, the stretch of beaches is broken up by piers overlooking the Indian Ocean, all safe for swimming with shark nets and lifeguards. The Golden Mile is a surfer's mecca (particularly North Beach) and a fun place to soak up some local color, although you may not want to hang around after dark, especially in Central and South Beach.
