Ponderosa is a great day-trip in the summer, particularly for families looking for an easy half-day of paddling in the bay or a few miles of mild bike terrain. In the winter, however, is when this park really shines, with 15 miles of Nordic skiing and snowshoe trails. Sliding past the shoreline on the Lakeside Trails (there's both an easy and an intermediate route) is as peaceful as snowshoeing up the Ridgeline Trail is strenuous. The diversity of terrain on this 1000-acre peninsula is what makes the routes so rewarding, with everything from high-country vistas to some of the largest old-growth stands in the West. The Masters World Cup of Nordic Skiing gave some serious validation when it selected the park to host its 2008 competition.
