Today, a monument to Cook sits on a protected historic site and overlooks the bay, which holds marine sanctuary status. This is a popular spot for snorkelers and divers who want to explore the rich coral reefs within the sanctuary, and possibly see one of the pods of spinner dolphins that hang out here. Kealakekua is also a popular kayaking destination, but recent changes have limited land access—permits from the Department of Land and Natural Resources are required.
