Cretan Adventures offers a smorgasbord of guided hikes all around the island, but beach seekers will gravitate toward the eight-day southwestern Crete tour. This moderate hike (six hours maximum a day) on rocky footpaths crosses streams and gorges on its way to huge empty stretches of sand. Along the way, you'll take in the spectacular White Mountains, coastal trails, old fishing villages, and coastline only accessible by boat, not to mention ruins and temples from Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine times. The hike starts at the old Venetian port of Chania, and the climax is an ascent to the summit of Mountain Gingilos, above Samaria Gorge, Europe's largest.
