Stone Mountain Park, less than 20 miles from downtown Atlanta, is a family-friendly destination known for its hiking trails, riverboat cruises, Skyride cable car, and laser shows. It's all centered around Stone Mountain, a 1,600-foot granite peak with three figures of the Confederate States of America—Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis—carved into its cliffs. Aside from the park's natural beauty, there are many attractions to delight adults and children alike. On Sky Hike, visitors trek through the treetops on one of the nation's largest family adventure courses. While secured to the overhead safety system, visitors can explore the quarter-of-a-mile course, traverse suspended bridges, leap from one wooden slat to another, balance on a single rope high above the ground, or climb to the top on vertical net bridges. If heights are not your thing, check out the Scenic Railroad, a full-size locomotive from the 1940s with open-air cars that take visitors on a lively five-mile excursion around Stone Mountain. The experience includes exciting tales of real-life train adventures, as told by conductor Fire Box Floyd. Other popular exhibits include the Lasershow Spectacular, Antebellum Plantation and Farmyard, Summit Skyride, and Stone Mountain Museum at Memorial Hall.
