The southern tip of Martinique is home to the 477-acre Caravelle Nature Preserve, a well-protected peninsula jutting into the Atlantic Ocean near the town of Trinité. It's an ecological wonderland of dry forests, rocky coastlines, mangroves, and some of the safest beaches for swimming along the island's eastern coastline. Hikers can spend hours exploring the network of well-marked trails here (just avoid the poisonous mancenillier trees, with sap and fruit that can cause skin burns). A lot of visitors travel here to see the ruins of the old slave plantation of Château Dubuc, but it's worth lingering to soak up the pristine nature of the area.
