• To visit the Camargue is to experience the natural beauty of southern France and Provence, a national park known for its marshes, white horses, black bulls and pink flamingoes. One of the best ways to see it is by boat tour, but if you have older kids (over seven), opt for a horseback tour from one of the local farms.
• There are tours of the famous salt marshes with their huge piles of sparkling white salt; ask for the Petit Train des Salins, which runs tours through the saltworks.
• Among the places to visit are the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gard, where the birds of the Camargue are rehabilitated and can be seen; Musee Camarguais, which interprets the history and geology of the region; and lovely Sainte Maries de la Mer, a vibrant town to explore and from which many tours leave.
