This group of granite islands in the Straits of Bonifacio between Corsica and northeastern Sardinia is made up of seven main islands and about 20 other small islets. They are right off the uber-popular Costa Smeralda. Boaters love wandering around the isles, which have been inhabited since prehistoric times. They have always been strategically important, and Napoleon spent some time shelling them. Nowadays, U.S. nuclear submarines are docked at a NATO naval base there. That's despite the fact that the islands have been a national park since 1996, with unique flora and fauna like pinewood, holm oaks, juniper bushes, cormorants, and Corsican gulls. At Caprera, the second biggest island in the chain, there is a tourist village with a Club Med and a sailing center. But overall, you'll find nothing there but empty bays and beaches awaiting your exploration.
