Lying on the western shore of Corsica, about midway between Propriano and Belvedere, is this obscure but well-worth-it beach. Secluded Portigliolo is not even a village, just two campgrounds and a restaurant serving great Corsican food, but make the trek here for the wonderful snorkeling spot just off the restaurant's parking lot. A few feet from shore are large rocks, some partially submerged in the surf, making for one of the best snorkeling areas on the island, protected from the prevalent south wind. Also known as Plage du Portigliolo, it's located on the southern tip of the Gulf of Ajaccio, which was rated the cleanest in Europe. From June through late September, you'll also find sailing, windsurfing, and sea-kayaking rentals on the beach, but without the crowds. The main resort town of Porticcio is just ten miles north along the coastline.
