This reserve has helped make Guadeloupe the most popular spot for scuba among the French-speaking Caribbean islands. Nearly 1,000 acres around the Pigeon islets became famous when Jacques Cousteau filmed here in the 1950s, and he was influential in helping create this marine preserve after realizing its incredible array of underwater flora and fauna. He dubbed the area "one of the world's ten best diving spots." Beyond the myriad finger, black, brain, and star corals divers will discover sea urchins, parrotfish, sponges, tortoises, lobsters, and gorgons, not to mention humpback whales during winter. There is no fishing or anchoring of boats here, so the only way to get to the reserve is via dive tours, some of which take snorkelers as well. The seas are thankfully calm here and you needn’t go very deep to see the good stuff.
