Catch Gas Chambers at Cape Kiwanda State Park to surf waves up to 12 feet high. Avoid the crowds. Because the water is very cold, beach traffic is minimal; shark attacks can occur. Get some value out of your SUV--driving is permitted on the beach. Have a beer with the local surfers at a brewpub that overlooks the break.

  • Cape Kiwanda's six-story dune is one of its finest features. It's steep, so pace yourself on the way down—a face plant at these angles won't be softened much by sand.
  • Watch Pacific City's famous Dory Fleet launch into the surf near this spot (Pacific City has no dock or harbor).
  • From extreme high tide to extreme low tide, the entire area is part of a designated Marine Garden.
