BeachExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • The annual Nelscott Reef Big Wave Tow-in Classic takes place when conditions are perfect for mammoth waves.
  • Organizers set a time window during which to monitor conditions. When it's clear the mega waves are coming, competitors and fans have 48 hours to get to Lincoln City for the big event.
  • The competition started in 2005, and it's gaining recognition as one of the prime monster-wave surfing competitions. In 2006, Hawaiian world champions took top honors.
An international surfing competition in Oregon? You bet. We're talking world-class tow-in surfing, and Nelscott Reef, about a half mile off the coast from Lincoln City, is viewable from shore with binoculars.
