• Although Dali's most famous painting, "The Persistence of Memory" has been shown here (as recently as June 2008), its permanent home is in New York City's Museum of Modern Art. However, the museum in Sarasota is home to Dali's "sequel" painting, 1954's "The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory."
• Best known for its 96 oil paintings, the museum's collection also features well over a thousand other Dali pieces in various media, including drawings, photographs, sculptures and watercolors.
• Having outgrown its original home in Cleveland, the collection's future was unclear for some time in the late 1970s, as its owners looked for a museum capable of properly displaying and caring for Dali's works. A Wall Street Journal article headlined, "Art World Dilly Dallies over Dalís", caught the eye of a St. Pete attorney, and he organized the support that brought the collection here.
