The Siuslaw River stretches for about 110 miles along the Pacific Coast of Oregon and passes through the Siuslaw National Forest. Historically, the river valley has been one of the productive timber regions in Oregon. The river has also been a spawning ground for both Chinook and Coho salmon.

In many ways the town is defined by the Siuslaw River and its entry into the Pacific. The city's historic Old Town sits on the banks of the Siuslaw where visitors stroll, watch local artisans, or hop aboard an old-fashioned sternwheeler for a scenic excursion.
