This challenging 1.6-mile trail switchbacks through a mixed conifer and hardwood forest. Look out for old-growth madrone trees along the route. The path spills into a small meadow dotted with trees and remnants of an old mining shelter called Carlton Pasture. Mature ponderosa pines border the meadow. From this point the trail heads west back into the forest, which is accented by rock outcrops.
