• The park features a half-mile paved trail with interpretive signs designed to educate visitors and help parents of pre-literate children feign omniscience. Bicycles, wheelchairs, strollers—they're all welcome. If you're here during the summer, bring water, 100-proof DEET repellent, and a strong will to survive.
• Before you visit, pick up a backcountry permit over at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and you'll have access to six more miles of pristine, unpaved trails at the hammock.
• How to Make a Hammock: Find a tidal marsh. Plant a few salt-resistant hardwood trees. Trees drop leaves. Over centuries this process raises the soil elevation below. The ever-flexing tides gently claw at these mounds, creating defined, tear-shaped humps of fertility, home to legions of non-salt-resistant plants unable to survive just a few feet away on the wet marshes.
