The green-blazed Southwoods Trail is a pleasant hike through an old beech and shagbark hickory forest. The trail is fairly level and can be wet during periods of excessive rain. The large 17" crow-sized pileated woodpecker makes his home in this section of woods. His prominent red crest, white neck stripes, and conspicuous white wing linings are brought to attention at his loud cuk-cuk-cuk. You're more likely to hear him then see him, however, in recent years he's adapted nicely to human intrusion.
Directions: From Milford, OH, Travel east on State Route 131 for 8 miles. Bear left on SR 727 and proceed 3 miles to the park entrance. Southwoods Trail is accessible southeast of the campground check-in station or along Lake Drive at the terminus of Lakeview Trail.
