• This urban wetland center, just 25 minutes from Central London, has viewing towers and "hides" from which families can observe birds and other wildlife without disturbing them. The three-story Peacock Tower even has elevators to all floors and sweeping views of the surrounding wetlands.
• Check out the interactive Discovery Center with water games, and the adventure area for ages three to 11 with a zip line, climbing wall, and giant recreated water vole tunnel (endangered water voles are wetland residents). There's a lakeside restaurant and free guided tours. Families with young children can explore easily on the network of paths and boardwalks around ponds and wetland meadows.
• The center is on one of London's cycle routes, so you can bike out there and be even more environmentally friendly.
