Traverse Delaware's piedmont hills rich in woodland and open field. Many nearby alternative trails available including bike paths and exercise courses.

The Whitetail Trail is located in the Walter S. Carpenter Recreation Area that offers picnicking, drinking water, restrooms, a disc golf course, and public telephone. The trailhead is located just north of the picnic area marked with a white arrow on a blue blaze. It is important to remember the trail color because numerous other trails merge, juncture and overlap the white-arrowed, blue-blazed trail at various points throughout the 3-mile hike. It begins on a wide grassy path through open meadow. Look for red winged blackbirds perched on swaying stalks. A red marker indicates a right turn in the trail. You'll pass one of the Life Course Trails to a rise overlooking park meadows and woods. Continue straight, not to be confused by a blue arrow on the left. Shortly, you'll reach a resting bench where folks enjoy the view. At nearly one mile into the hike, a glorious stand of tulip poplars dominate the land. Leaving the poplar woods, the trail descends into a younger forest making a switchback at 1.5 mile. Again, other trails intersect and occasionally overlap for a distance. Wells Lane is reached at 2 miles. Follow the road several hundred feed turning left onto a gravel path at the edge of a meadow. At 2.2 miles, Millstone Trail and Twin Valley Trail intersect. Continue on into a woods and out into another open meadow then into a woods once more before reaching the parking area and trailhead. Hiking at dusk and dawn affords sights of white-tailed deer at wood's edge.

Directions: From Newark, DE, Take State Route 896 north 2.6 miles turning right into the Walter S. Carpenter Recreation Area of White Clay Creek State Park. Trailhead is located just north of the picnic parking area.
