Museum Kura Hulanda is an anthropological museum that focuses on the predominant cultures of Curacao. It highlights the African slave trade, the West African and Antillean art, among other areas of interest.
In many ways this museum is quite daring, facing the island's complex history with the slave trade and colonization directly. For that reason alone, it should be explored.
Housed within the larger Hotel Kura Hulanda, the property itself is beautiful, and worth exploring. Expect to find little cafes nestled in garden-rich squares and a scattering of nice African-inspired sculptures.

Dutch gay philanthropist Jakob Gelt Dekker founded the Museum Kura Hulanda inside the village-style complex of his Willemstad resort of the same nameon the site of a former slave-auction yardand it's a fascinating anthropological journey through the cultural heritage of Curacao. Rooms filled with masks and sculptures showcase Africa's rich history, and the poignant displays dedicated to the history of the slave trade (for which Curacao was an outpost) are world class. There are also exhibitions dedicated to voodoo and evolution, making for a thought-provoking mix. It's worth it to arrange for a guide or an audio tour, but allow some time afterward for quiet contemplation in the sculpture garden.
