Following meadows, the trail to the historic Hornbeck Homestead crosses land once occupied by Lake Florissant. The return route overlooks the ancient lakebed and the mountain ranges beyond. Signs of elk, deer, coyote and other wildlife are common along this scenic loop. This trail is 4 miles long and rated moderate in terms of difficulty.
Directions: From Florissant, Traveling west on Highway 24, you'll come to a junction with State Road 1 in Florissant. Turn left on to 1 and travel 2.5 miles to the road that leads to the Florissant National Monument Visitors Center.
