A strenuous 9-mile-roundtrip hike up this trail brings you to the "rooftop" of Arizona and a panorama that extends across much of northern Arizona. The view north includes the Grand Canyon and southern Utah. From the trailhead on the north side of the lower parking lot at the Arizona Snowbowl (elev. 9,500 feet), the trail switchbacks up the mountainside to a saddle (elev. 11,800 feet), then turns left on an exposed ridge to the summit of Mt. Humphreys at 12,633 feet. Dense forests of Engelmann spruce, corkbark fir, and aspen gradually give way to stunted Engelmann spruce and bristlecone pine as you ascend. On the ridge, only tiny alpine plants cling to life. The roundtrip takes 6-8 hours, and it’s a good idea to first spend some days in the Flagstaff area to acclimatize.
