This brick-and-wood structure was originally built in AD 652 to store and protect holy scriptures transported from India. Tang monk Xuan Zhang, who brought them, also translated them into a whopping 1,335 volumes of Chinese script. Today, devout Buddhists come to pray at the temple, while non-Buddhist visitors content themselves with climbing the 64-meter-tall pagoda. This elegant seven-story brick structure is one of the city's most iconic attractions. Children will be impressed by the Buddhist statues and murals housed in the halls of the temple complex. The pagoda isn't the only attraction here, as it was built on the grounds of one of the biggest temples in China, the Da Ci'en Temple, which was originally founded in AD 647. Great family entertainment comes in the form of the nightly fountain and music show that takes place in the square.
